Participation in one of Asia’s leading carbon market events provided an opportunity to present an Indigenous-led conservation model, understand regional trends and explore new opportunities for the project.
From July 7 to 9, REDD+ Matavén participated in the IETA Asia Climate Summit in Hong Kong, an event that brought together more than 650 participants and 120 experts working across carbon markets, climate finance and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The project’s participation provided an opportunity to bring the story of Matavén to a region playing an increasingly important role in global climate action. Asia Pacific is home to major financial centers, companies, investors, governments and buyers that are influencing the future of trade, climate regulation and international carbon markets.
Over three days, representatives from the private sector, international organizations, project developers, validation and verification bodies, and other specialists discussed topics including Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, CORSIA, climate project finance, the evolution of regulated markets and the increasing internationalization of carbon markets across Asia.
For REDD+ Matavén, participating in these forums helps the project understand the evolving needs of buyers and investors, build relationships with stakeholders in new regions and present a model that connects forest protection with Indigenous governance, biodiversity and community well-being.
Carbon markets require collaboration among governments, standards, companies, investors, project developers, validation and verification bodies, and intermediaries. Events such as the IETA Asia Climate Summit help build trust, exchange knowledge and connect market needs with the realities of the territories where conservation takes place.
From the forests of Matavén to the financial centers of Hong Kong, the project continues to create pathways for Indigenous leadership, transparency and the protection of the Matavén Forest to gain greater visibility within international climate action.
