In our ongoing commitment to bolster food security, create new income streams for indigenous peoples, and advocate for sustainable agricultural practices, we proudly hosted successful socialization workshops in late 2023 across 7 communities within Matavén: Cumaral, Palmarito, Miraluz, Morocoto, Morichal, Yuri, Berlín, and San Luis de la Rompida. With 105 participants including beneficiaries of the Agroforestry Project of cocoa, plantain and corn, as well as members of the Coomatavén Cooperative, we’re fostering a brighter, more sustainable future.
What happened in these workshops?
During these gatherings, we tackled crucial topics vital for the sustainable development of communities:
- Strengthening the Goals and Activities of the REDD+ Matavén Project: We revisited our central objective and the various activities undertaken by REDD+ Matavén to stop deforestation, protect and conserve forests, biodiversity, and waters within Matavén, all while enhancing the living conditions of its indigenous communities.
- Progress of Cocoa Agroforestry Project and Organic Cocoa Certification: We shared updates, experiences, achievements, and expectations regarding the project and the journey towards achieving organic cocoa certification.
- Management and Benefits of the Coomatavén Cooperative: From collaborations with the Rural Development Agency of the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture to the perks of Coomatavén membership, we delved into every aspect of the cooperative and its significance in community life. Additionally, we welcomed 6 new associates, reinforcing the strength of our Coomatavén Cooperative day by day.
In Cumaral and Morichal, where our Cooperative Stores operate, we conducted intensive training sessions for our shopkeepers. Throughout these sessions, our focus was on equipping them with the necessary tools for efficient inventory management and proper handling of expired or damaged products, aided by a comprehensive procedural manual. Furthermore, we provided guidance on maintaining accurate records of sales and contributions. Additionally, we prepared them to engage in the practice of bartering, outlining the conditions and streamlining the storage process for mañoco and cocoa with pallets crafted by community members.
Exclusive News:
- In November and December 2023, Coomatavén purchased over 1 ton of cocoa from indigenous families participating in the Cocoa Agroforestry Project.
- Matavén indigenous communities can now exchange their mañoco for groceries and provisions at Coomatavén’s Cooperative Stores. Additionally, participants of the Cocoa Agroforestry Project will have the opportunity to swap their cocoa for a variety of products.
Outcomes and Outlook:
The indigenous communities emphasized the valuable support from the technical team and expressed their excitement and approval of the Project, highlighting the remarkable advancements in their crops thanks to the bio-preparations they are implementing and the positive impact on their lives. Significant improvements have been observed in cocoa and plantain production, as well as an increase in household income due to the sale of dried cocoa almonds.
11 years making a difference!
At REDD+ Matavén we are committed to continuing our united efforts towards a more sustainable world.
