The Resguardo Selva Matavén is home to six Indigenous ethnic groups: Cubeo, Curripaco, Piapoco, Piaroa, Puinave, and Sikuani. Together, they form a population of over 22.486 Indigenous peoples, located in the last well-preserved transition zones in Colombia, between the Orinoquía savannas and the Amazon rainforest. Their knowledge, presence, and stewardship are the lifeblood of the REDD+ Matavén Project, a unique initiative created by the communities and for the communities.
ACATISEMA (Asociación de Cabildos y Autoridades Tradicionales Indígenas de la Selva de Matavén) has represented these six Indigenous groups since 2002. Leading the protection and sustainable management of the Resguardo Selva de Matavén, ACATISEMA exemplifies the leadership of Indigenous peoples. Their governance ensures the preservation of their cultural heritage while safeguarding the environment for future generations
The REDD+ Matavén Project is rooted in the rights, traditions, and goals of Indigenous peoples. Community leaders, represented by ACATISEMA, play an active role in all decision-making processes. This governance model empowers the communities to protect their land while promoting sustainable development.
ACATISEMA’s vision and commitment are the backbone of the project, showcasing the power of community-led efforts in preserving ecosystems and advancing global climate action. Today, REDD+ Matavén stands as a vital force in climate change mitigation, driven by the leadership and stewardship of Indigenous communities.
