Strengthening Indigenous Governance through Civil Registration in the Orinoco Medio

At REDD+ Matavén, we believe that strengthening Indigenous governance begins with formal recognition and the right to identity for every community member. That’s why, in collaboration with the National Civil Registry of Colombia, we organized a documentation brigade in the Berrocal Ajota – Orinoco Medio sector, reaching Indigenous populations throughout this area of Matavén.

Identity, organization, and data-driven decision-making

This initiative laid the foundation for stronger community organizatio, one that can make more effective and informed decisions that truly respond to local needs. Having accurate, up-to-date information is essential for the sustainable development of Matavén and for the successful implementation of strategies within the REDD+ Matavén Project. It enables us to design culturally relevant and territory-based activities, programs, and solutions that respect the unique dynamics of each community.

Indigenous governance at the heart of forest conservation

Access to identification empowers local leadership, encourages active participation, and reinforces the role of Indigenous peoples as guardians of the forest, water, and biodiversity. Each step toward recognition and organization helps build a stronger path toward sustainability and Indigenous autonomy.

💚 At REDD+ Matavén, we remain committed to processes that unite environmental conservation with human and community development.
