Strengthening Indigenous Governance Through Culture and Community

At REDD+ Matavén, we know that protecting the forest begins with empowering the people who call it home.

That’s why we actively support cultural festivals, traditional sports, and community gatherings; because these celebrations are powerful tools to strengthen Indigenous governance and community resilience.

In Matavén, where six Indigenous Peoples preserve centuries of ancestral wisdom, events like the Festival of the Mochila become opportunities for children, youth, and elders to come together, celebrate their heritage, and reinforce their shared identity.

When communities are united, organized, and proud of who they are, they are better equipped to defend their territory, protect natural resources like forests, water, and biodiversity, and lead sustainable development from within.

By investing in cultural heritage and local governance, REDD+ Matavén promotes long-term forest conservation driven by Indigenous leadership.

This is not just climate action, it’s action rooted in culture, identity, and the voices of those who have protected these lands for generations.
