During 2021, we continued to successfully perform our “Activity 4: Development of Family-based Agri-Food Production Systems”; by boosting produce availability for household consumption, promoting sustainable agricultural practices (land use) and increasing soil fertility to reduce the rate of deforestation and guarantee food security and food self-sufficiency for Matavén indigenous communities.
- We updated the Sustainable Management Plan for Matavén lands and forests.
- We monitored and updated information (cartography with land use, survey templates, follow-up templates of the crops/conucos, etc.) to promote better land use, measure performance and set new targets ensuring food security.
- We provided monthly monetary aid to 312 Captains to promote food security in their communities.
- We created agreements with specialized organizations to deliver technical training/assistance.
- We provided agricultural tools: 95 cassava graters, 145 lawn mowers, 7 fumigators.
- We provided kitchen tools: 1 freezer, 1 refrigerator, 68 pots, 5 metal bowls to support women in their daily tasks and improve health conditions.
We also designed and implemented (“Activity 6: Development of Productive Projects”) 36 small and medium-scale Productive Projects, 4 large-scale Productive Projects and the Coomatavén Cooperative, to guarantee Matavén food security and food self-sufficiency.
REDD+ Matavén is an environmental & social project tackling climate change and multi-dimensions of poverty. We stop deforestation, we protect tropical forests in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest (Vichada, Colombia), while safeguarding its biodiversity and improving their indigenous people quality of life.
