For more than a decade, the REDD+ Matavén Project, through Indigenous leadership and governance, has worked consistently to protect the territory, reduce deforestation, and keep alive the waters and biodiversity that sustain this vast Indigenous Reserve.
Located in the transition between Colombia’s Orinoquía and Amazon regions, Matavén is home to more than 22,000 Indigenous people from the Cubeo, Curripaco, Piapoco, Piaroa, Puinave, and Sikuani peoples, who safeguard over one million hectares of tropical forest.
Thanks to the actions implemented by the Project, deforestation has been significantly reduced.
REDD+ Matavén is a living story of Indigenous leadership, organization, and hope; a model where forest protection and community well-being advance together, strengthening governance and climate action from within the territory.
