In the community of Sarrapia, children, young people, elders and families came together to share art, music, traditional games and knowledge that strengthen Indigenous identity.
The sound of traditional instruments, handwoven natural fibers and the joy of families marked the beginning of the Bocón Cultural Festival, held in the community of Sarrapia, within the Selva de Matavén Indigenous Reserve.
Throughout the gathering, community members shared cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations. Elders demonstrated their knowledge of traditional weaving, while young people took part in archery competitions, artistic performances and activities reflecting their connection to history and territory.
A Gathering Across Generations
Traditional music and dance brought energy to the stage, accompanied by the talent of local musical groups. Through games, body painting, fiber garments and artistic performances, children and young people actively participated in a celebration led by the communities.
More than a festival, the Bocón Cultural Festival created a space to gather, share knowledge and strengthen connections across generations. Elders passed on their knowledge, while younger generations embraced and expressed it with pride.
At REDD+ Matavén, forest protection is understood as deeply connected to Indigenous culture and governance. Traditional knowledge, relationships with nature and the identity of the peoples who inhabit the Selva de Matavén are essential to the long-term conservation of the territory.
