Our Cooperative Coomatavén was invited by the Municipal Government of Inírida to participate in the Farmers’ Fair, held on June 22nd in Inírida, Colombia. This fair brought together tourists, institutions, local indigenous communities, local organizations, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), and others. A valuable opportunity for rural producers to offer their products directly to consumers, promoting the importance of family and sustainable agriculture in Colombia.
At the event, Coomatavén showcased the Agroforestry Productive Project for cacao, plantain, and native forest species, presenting a cacao transformation exhibit by the communities of Cumaral (zone 5) and San Luis de la Rompida (zone 4). The presentation was conducted directly by the indigenous women cacao producers, highlighting their fundamental role in Colombian agriculture. They displayed cacao plants in bags, cacao pods, dry cacao beans, roasted beans, and transformed products such as liquor, chocolate, and chocolate bars. Additionally, they exhibited plantain, pineapple, and mañoco. The sale of these products generated significant income for the indigenous producer families.
Coomatavén was established in 2019 with the goal of integrating and coordinating the various organizations operating in the Resguardo Indígena Unificado de la Selva Matavén and the participants of the REDD+ Matavén Productive Projects. The aim is to ensure food security, promote sustainable agricultural practices, reduce pressure on the forest, and create new economic opportunities for indigenous communities through the creation of a network of local solidarity economic circuits.
At REDD+ Matavén, we are committed to the integral and sustainable development of Matavén, Colombia, and the world!
