REDD+ Matavén at COP16: Indigenous Leadership and Global Climate Action

The REDD+ Matavén Project played a key role at COP16, bringing its commitment to conservation and sustainable development to the international stage. During the event, Indigenous leaders from Matavén shared their ancestral knowledge of conservation, highlighting the vital role of Indigenous communities in protecting forests, biodiversity, and water resources in the Resguardo Indígena Unificado Selva Matavén.

From October 21 to November 1, 2024, more than 6,000 people visited our stand, where they explored the history of the Project, its impact on carbon emissions reduction, and the initiatives that strengthen biodiversity protection and the well-being of local communities. Through a conservation approach that integrates scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom, REDD+ Matavén fosters long-term environmental resilience.

The presentations held on October 24, 26, and 29 provided a crucial platform for discussing the Project’s progress and its role in global climate action. These sessions facilitated new partnerships, strengthened strategies, and reaffirmed REDD+ Matavén’s commitment to ecosystem protection and the recognition of Indigenous leadership in environmental management.

Participation in COP16 positioned REDD+ Matavén as a leading initiative in the fight against climate change, showcasing the importance of community-led approaches in forest conservation and emissions reduction. The active involvement of Indigenous communities reinforces the idea that local governance is key to long-term sustainability.

We extend our gratitude to all attendees and partners who made this experience possible. REDD+ Matavén continues to move forward with concrete actions, building a future where conservation and sustainable development go hand in hand.
