Strengthening Indigenous Education in Matavén

In Matavén, education is one of the pillars that strengthens the autonomy, culture, and sustainable development of Indigenous communities.

This is why we celebrate the recent dissemination of Decree 1345 of 2023, a milestone that takes a decisive step toward ensuring the labor rights and career advancement of Indigenous Pedagogical Facilitators and Educators in Colombia.

What is Decree 1345 of 2023?
This decree establishes guidelines to recognize, value, and safeguard the Indigenous teaching career, respecting the cultural and linguistic particularities of each people. For pedagogical facilitators, key figures in Indigenous education systems, it means greater job stability, real opportunities for career progression, and stronger training processes.

A shared achievement in Matavén
The socialization of this decree in Matavén brought together the General Coordinator of ACATISEMA, Indigenous leaders and school principals from the five zones of the territory.

This achievement
directly impacts Matavén by:

  • Recognizing the work of pedagogical facilitators who safeguard language, culture, and ancestral knowledge.
  • Strengthening Indigenous education, ensuring that learning processes reflect the realities and needs of the territory.
  • Supporting the mission of the REDD+ Matavén Project to enhance community well-being, since education is a key tool for territorial governance, forest conservation, and the creation of sustainable livelihoods.

Education and conservation: one path forward
At the REDD+ Matavén Project, we know there is no conservation without education. Every pedagogical facilitator empowered in their role is also a cultural and environmental guardian, inspiring new generations to protect the biodiversity, waters, and forests that make Matavén unique.

We remain committed, with transparency, integrity, and collaboration, to making Indigenous education a driver of change, pride, and a sustainable future for the communities of this territory.
