Sustainable Cocoa in Matavén: Protecting Forests and Strengthening Communities

In the heart of the Selva de Matavén Indigenous Reserve, cocoa is more than just a crop—it is an opportunity to strengthen food security, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and create new income sources for Indigenous communities. Through the Agroforestry Cocoa, Plantain, Fruit Trees, and Native Timber Species Project, Indigenous families have found a productive alternative that protects the forest and enhances their well-being.

A Productive Model with Real Impact

In partnership with Fundación Granja Tarapacá, this project benefits 90 Indigenous families across 9 communities, driving:

  • Reduced pressure on forests and biodiversity conservation.
  • Sustainable agroforestry practices that regenerate ecosystems.
  • Food security and crop diversification.
  • New economic opportunities and community empowerment.
  • A measurable climate impact aligned with high-integrity carbon markets.

This initiative is part of REDD+ Matavén commitment to protecting the transition zone between the Orinoquía and the Colombian Amazon, ensuring that Indigenous communities can sustain their livelihoods while preserving the forest and its biodiversity.
